Transcultural Adaptation and Validation in French of the Research Capacity and Culture Tool for Healthcare Professionals in Primary Care

Abstract
Objectives: To culturally adapt the Research Capacity and Culture Tool for 2 French-speaking contexts (Quebec and France) and to assess the reliability of the adapted version.
Method: A standardized forward–backward translation was conducted by 2 certified translators and 2 bilingual primary care health professionals. Cultural adaptation for Quebec and French contexts was achieved through feedback from 11 healthcare professionals until consensus was reached. The preliminary version was pretested by family physicians and medical residents in Quebec (n=30), and the final version was administered to Quebec podiatrists (n=127) and French pedicurist-podiatrists (n=2,145). Of these respondents, 93 podiatrists and 877 chiropodists completed the entire questionnaire and were retained for the final analyses. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient.
Results: The French version comprises approximately 45% more words. Certain expressions were adjusted to account for linguistic and cultural differences. Preliminary reliability testing indicated strong internal consistency in the organizational (α=0.98), team (α=0.97) and individual (α=0.96) domains. These findings were confirmed in a subsequent sample of 970 participants (α=0.97, 0.97, and 0.94).
Discussion and Conclusion: The French version of the Research Capacity and Culture Tool, adapted for the Quebec and French contexts, demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency among primary care health professionals. These findings represent a preliminary step in the adaptation and validation process and warrant further studies to examine additional psychometric properties of the instrument.
