Abstract

Introduction: The intensive care units (ICUs) environment, characterized by high technological density, continuous monitoring, frequent alarms, and spatial and mobility constraints, may contribute to the development of post-intensive care syndrome. A growing number of studies highlight the complex dynamics between the physical environment of ICUs and its various actors. In this context, investigating its materiality, i.e., the physical, sensory, and functional properties of objects and materials composing a space, and its interactions with key stakeholders is essential to inform the design of healing environments.

Objective: To understand the perception of key care stakeholders (patients, families and bedside staff) regarding materiality in fostering a healing ICU environment.

Method: This multiple case study using Yin’s approach will be carried out in 2 (cases) distinct (cardiac surgery and respiratory ICU) adult ICUs within a tertiary and quaternary care hospital, selected for their different environments and adult patient populations. The study draws on an integrated multidisciplinary theoretical framework that incorporates design perspectives. Data collection comprises: 1) non-participant observations (material inventory); 2) observer-participant observations of the physical environment and stakeholder interactions; 3) semi-structured individual interviews with stakeholders. Data analysis will include triangulation, reflexive thematic intra-case analysis, and inter-case analysis.

Discussion and Research Spin-offs: The findings are expected to inform healthcare professionals on how to more effectively address materiality in adult ICU environments, and to support the development of concrete adaptations aimed at transforming these units into spaces that promote wellbeing and recovery.
